Hey Larry Hughes, Please Stop Taking So Many Bad Shots

Hey Larry Hughes, Please Stop Taking So Many Bad Shots header image 2

My Work Here Is Done.

February 24th, 2008 · 104 Comments

I started this site for one reason: to get Larry Hughes to stop taking so many bad shots. And along the way, I was hoping that I could make a few people laugh too. I wasn’t looking for any personal recognition and I’ve remained anonymous throughout this entire process because I felt this site was the voice of many Cavs fans and not just me.

I’ve read all of your feedback, I’ve considered many of the options, and here’s what I’m going to do:
___________________________________________________

Keep the site going for Bulls fans?

Bulls Fan

There’s no way in hell I’m going to do this because I hate the Bulls! Look, we’re division rivals and I’m still bitter about what Jordan did to us in the 80’s. This site was trying to get Larry to stop taking  bad shots, but now that he’s a Bull, he’s your problem! And besides, Chicago fans should be thanking me for raising the money to buy Larry the Better Shooting DVD - it seems to have helped some.

Verdict: No.
___________________________________________________

Convert the site to HeyBenWallaceBlahBlahBlah.com?

 B_wallace

I’ve received hundreds of suggestions that I should rename the site to something mentioning Ben Wallace’s poor shooting. But there are a bunch of reasons why I don’t want to do this:

1) We already know he can’t shoot free throws, and that’s not we’re asking him to do. We need him to play tough defense, get rebounds, and teach Zydrunas Ilgauskas how to become the next Rick Mahorn of the NBA.

2) It’s too early to start ripping on the new guys. Let’s give them a chance to gel and make this thing work. It’s the same reason I waited 2 seasons before complaining about Larry.

3) While the new guys aren’t perfect, I don’t think there’s a single player on our roster who is capable of the profound brickitude that Larry Hughes provided.

Verdict: No.
___________________________________________________

Make it an all-purpose Cleveland Cavaliers site?

Damon and LeBron

I’ve considered this very seriously, but I’m going to pass for now. I wasn’t trying to launch a blogging career, and I wasn’t pursuing this as a money-making venture. I was just a frustrated Clevelander sick and tired of watching one of our “star” players underachieve.

And I’m not a greedy guy: there are enough fantastic Cleveland sports sites out there to satisfy all of our needs. TheClevelandFan.com is spectacular in its depth and breadth of content, Brian Windhorst does a great job as a beat writer,  WaitingForNextYear.com has been coming on strong lately with great stuff, Mistake By The Lake is always good for humorous and stat-driven content, etc, etc. So does the world really need another Cavs site?

Verdict: No.
___________________________________________________

Make it a site that rips on ALL underachieving NBA players?

Darius

It’s another good idea, but it just won’t be the same as All Larry, All The Time. And there are already a few sites that do this, and I’m not interested in following suit. Part of the reason is that it would require that I watch about 10 times more games every night in order to monitor the crappiness across the league and I just don’t have the time (or the cable package).

Verdict: No.
___________________________________________________

Freeze the site as a memento of the Larry Hughes Era in Cleveland?

B Fantana

Of course I’ll keep the site up so you can show it to your grandchildren when they ask about that Larry Hughes Web site guy. But when Larry was traded on February 21st, this mission was complete.  So I won’t be actively updating the content or tracking Larry’s progress anymore.

Verdict: Yes.
___________________________________________________

Channel my creativity into another project of epic importance?

Flowbee

I’ve learned a lot while running this site and it’s time to move on. But I’ve been brainstorming some other Web site ideas that I’m hoping to launch later this year. None of them focus solely on the Cavaliers, nor do I think I’ll do another Cleveland sports blog (never say never). But some of my ideas are sports related and hopefully you’ll see them emerge in the next few months. They will be weird and funny, and I think you’ll like them.

Verdict: Hell Yes.
____________________________________________________

And now some parting words…

To Cleveland fans:

 QLA

Thanks again for being so supportive. You are the most dedicated fans in the world and you deserve a championship. I’ve been very grateful for the emails and comments you’ve sent me the past few months and I’m still in awe of the response HLHPSTSMBS has generated. I’ll see you at the Cavs games!

___________________________________________________

To Delonte, Ben, Joe, and Wally:

New Cavaliers

Play hard and live up to your potential. If you guys help us win a championship, you will be loved by Clevelanders for the next eight thousand years.
___________________________________________________

To Larry Hughes:

Larry The Bull

Sorry if any of this hurt your feelings. As people like to say in professional sports, “it’s just business.” Like when the Cavs charge fans $7 for a beer and $20 for parking, or like the time Boozer swindled the blind guy, or when Modell moved the Browns, or when or when Manny left for more money. If everyone in professional sports wants to be ”all about business”, this is just a reminder that we fans can play that game too

Best of luck in Chicago! Hopefully you’re in a system that allows you to play up to your full potential. You can now slash to your heart’s content, you slasher you. And now that you’re in Chicago, it’s totally fine if you want to ignore this site, throw away the shooting DVD, and TAKE AS MANY BAD SHOTS AS YOU WANT.
___________________________________________________

Bye for now.

GO CAVS!

  • 7 Mo // Feb 25, 2008 at 11:36 am

Thank You for providing me with endless laughter over the past few months.

    You are correct….mission accomplished!

Best of luck to Larry. Worst of luck to the Bulls.

  • 8 jamie // Feb 25, 2008 at 11:40 am

You made the right choice. I just have to thank you for the laughs, as this site became my routine after every cavs game. I’ll keep a lookout for your next project (or at cavs games).

Enjoy riding off into the sunset.

  • 9 mike cooken chicken // Feb 25, 2008 at 11:53 am

thanks for the memories. but its not all sad…..you and i will always have aunt martha…….and vinny.

  • 10 Gmoney // Feb 25, 2008 at 12:00 pm

The Barry Sanders of slanderous blogging is leaving us in the middle of his prime. I love the idea that you are going out on top as a champion, clefan. Keep up the good work in whatever your next project may be (will you at least keep us informed here?).

You did the Lord’s work to get Larry out of here (not to mention Drew). You have earned your retirement.

  • 11 TVBrain // Feb 25, 2008 at 12:07 pm

Delonte made it so I don’t even miss Larry.

  • 12 Steve Buffum // Feb 25, 2008 at 12:21 pm

I am looking forward to the future sites:

    (or Franklin Gutierrez, I suppose)

In Cleveland, one expects no shortage of possibilities.

Finally, the site was brilliant, but I’m glad it has flamed out in nova-esque fashion. It means Larry Hughes is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

  • 13 David // Feb 25, 2008 at 12:29 pm

    Who is Larry Hughes??

What a great way to go out…congrats on a good job!!!

  • 14 Bill // Feb 25, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Hey just wanted to tell you that you are the man and I thought you did a heck of a job with this site, so I want to give you your props. I might not have agreed with everything but you always could back it up and to you shootboobieshoot it was also great to hear your comments and hopefully we will get a championship soon in this town! Take care guys.

P.S. If you guys want to come visit me in Chicago give me a holla, jk.

sad that tomorrow there will not be new post about crappy hughes shots but i’m happy because i’m sure - cavs can go far after this trade. good luck for them and thanks for “That Guy With The Larry Hughes Web Site” - it was amazing!
p.s. Z will play for LTU in Beijing this summer, want you or not! :D

  • 16 Mar // Feb 25, 2008 at 12:52 pm

Will miss this site, not Larry Hughes.

Someone has to make their own LH site for the bulls now, I dunno who, but someone.

  • 17 Jason Haynes // Feb 25, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Your website provided me with more than a view laughs since I discovered it a few months ago.

I played on a rival H.S. basketball team against Larry in St. Louis, and had the displeasure of guarding him many times. I’m glad your website provided me with some sense of revenge for those days when he used to kill me on the court.

Larry is a nice guy…but your website name is very aptly named. Ha.

  • 18 JulioF // Feb 25, 2008 at 1:07 pm

Ah yes! Going out on top, like Jim Brown, Barry Sanders.

What class. What style. What’s next?

Be sure to add prominent links here, to guide us all to your future works.

    We enjoyed the ride!

  • 19 J Beanie // Feb 25, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Fun stuff here. Will miss the site but I’m happy there is no longer a need for it.

After watching the Cavs game yesterday, I flipped over to watch some of the Bulls game. What was the first play I see? That’s right, a Larry Hughes air ball. Enjoy Chi-town.

  • 20 Dan // Feb 25, 2008 at 1:28 pm

Will you EVER release who you are???

  • 21 Andre // Feb 25, 2008 at 1:31 pm

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!………..you can’t do this to the city of Cleveland, your wit and humor have brought us great joy in the past months…..you must reconsider and use your powers for the good of all Cleveland sports…..You started a a dangerous trend for owners and GM’s across the sporting landscape…..A fan site dedicated to the decisions and boneheaded player moves that have plagued C-town for years……A small movement that became a national outcry…..To not continue in this brave new world of fans actually having an impact on what product goes on to court, field etc would be a major disservice to all the Cleveland fans who support and love what you did for them and the city……Please continue this blog as a venue for frustation and action of all Cleveland sports fans……You have single-handedly impacted the world of the NBA in a trult unique and scary(for chicken-shit executives)….Together we can lobby for a defense that can actually stop the run in Cleveland Browns Stadium…..And we can lobby for a new owner for the star-crossed Indians…….One that won’t sell the name to a hallowed stadium to an insurance company, then refuses to spend any more money to give the city the championship it so rightly deserved…..You have given hope to thousands, that yes our voice does matter, that we can make a impact if we all stand together and say in one unified voice “No More”

No more getting rolled by Pittsburgh every year!!!!!!

    No more epic playoff chokes.

No more rolling over for the Red Sux and the Yank-mes

    No more Shawn Kemp trades.

No more hoping the Colts will actually show up and play an actual NFL football game.

No more watching Tony “My Ankle” Parker destroy us in the Finals then wave to his wife who he is cheating on in the crowd.

No more replays of “The Shot, The Drive, The Fumble, Red Right 88, Vinny Testaverde, Game 7 of the ‘97 World Series, Game 6 of the ‘95 Series, etc. etc. etc.

    Please reconsider your choice

WE NEED YOU….IN OUR DEEPEST DARKEST HOURS WE NEED THE RAYS OF LIGHT AND TRUTH THIS SITE PROVIDES!!!!!!

    Go Cavs!!!!
    Fight Browns Fight!!!!!
    Go Tribe!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!BELIEVELAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 31 Matthew // Feb 25, 2008 at 6:17 pm

He missed 45+11+14=70 games in three years, not including the playoffs.

I have a feeling that the next person we complain about will be Opie West. Luckily, he’s a free agent after this year (along with Snow and Jones), so we can pick up a better point guard if he keeps shooting 2-12!

  • 32 C // Feb 25, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Great job on this hilarious blog. What you probably don’t realize is that you’ve even had a loyal following among us (admittedly not many) Larry Hughes fans out there, always hoping for the next ‘Bizarro Larry’ post. Also, kudos for walking out on top, though, I’m convinced Mike Brown’s stagnant offense will soon spawn the next heyxxxxpleasestoptakingsomanybadshots site.

  • 44 JD // Feb 25, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Ben Wallace might be my least favorite human being to ever get paid to play basketball. Larry Hughes could kill one of my family memebers, and I’m pretty sure I’d still rather root for him than Wallace. I don’t know why. Wallace isn’t a bad guy. I just hated having him on the Bulls, and I’m so glad he’s gone. Come on Larry, get that FG% up to 40. You can do it!

And, by the way, Ben Wallace can’t play defense anymore. He hasn’t for a few years. Don’t expect much out of him. The Bulls were better this year when Joakim freaking Noah was on the court. That’s a bad sign.

Best player in the trade, by far, is Joe Smith. You’ll enjoy him.

  • 45 Noah // Feb 25, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Larry shot 4-11 tonight. Solid 36 per cent!

  • 46 Goody // Feb 25, 2008 at 10:46 pm

excellent work, good luck and thanks for the laughs

  • 47 Sam // Feb 26, 2008 at 12:27 am

Sigh. I was so hoping you’d continue it [not for just bulls fans, just for Larry Hughes, in general]. Comedy gold, I tell you!
By the way, Hughes isn’t slashing. He doesn’t want to slash. He wants to “hit” his 18-foot jump shots. It’s pretty great.
I really wish we just cut the guys we traded away, so we wouldn’t have people on our team blocking potential again and people who’re really good not being played because our coach sucks.
Not having Ben Wallace: still a massive improvement. Looks like he’s working out well for the Cavs, though, which is good. I hope LeBron gets a title.
    Sigh. …

  • 48 Aj // Feb 26, 2008 at 2:15 am

As a Cavs fan i didn’t really like a fellow supporter taking the piss out of Larry Hughes. But what you came up with just made me laugh on the inside. Your creativity every week was better and better.

Its quite sad to see this site go, but the way you are ending things are good.

Although my suggestion i believe was quite good. Keep the site and use it to compare Larry Hughes with the Bulls to when he was with the Cavs. But its your decision.

Great work and hope to see some things of yours in the future. Make sure you email your new stuff around.

p.s. you got a miss print in the last sentence. shooing should be shooting.

    Enjoy your time off :-)

I liked this site. It was hilarious seeing you rant about Larry. Each terrible shooting performance was a story of it’s own. It’s a let down that you won’t be doing any more commentary. But I’d like to say…Wally’s not on the level of Larry but watch out…he can also throw a ton of bad shots so…let’s just see. Maybe you’ll do a site dedicated to Wally now if he starts doing the same crap.

  • 71 Justin // Feb 27, 2008 at 7:58 pm

clefan thanks alot for ruining the team now. We had something that was working and now we don’t it is all your fault!

  • 79 clefan // Feb 28, 2008 at 12:42 pm

    Bill,

    1) Kiss my ass.

    2) Let’s wait a bit before judging the trade. If you changed 60% of the starting lineup on the Browns, don’t you think it might take more than a week to gel?

  • 80 Kevin // Feb 28, 2008 at 1:07 pm

AJ - you are an idiot. Sure, Larry also had a couple of knockout games with the Cavs too… for example, 40 points vs the Magic. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. That does not change is 34% from behind the arch or his countless 2 for 11 performances. Not to mention missing layups and killing kittens.

Bill - are you fucking serious? I challenge you to form a basketball team who has never played together, have one practice, and then go compete with the Celtics. Give them some time, I am allready seeing some great play from Ben Wallace and Joe Smith, starting to do what they are supposed to do and what Drew and Larry didn’t. Larry was not helping us win.

Objective #1 of the Cavs - To Win.
Objective #1b - Keep the King happy. If the King isn’t happy, the Kingdom suffers. LeBron has been practically demanding a trade the entire season. When his contract expires, if he isn’t happy, then the Kingdom crumbles.

Great job on the site. Funny, fact driven, and smart. GO CAVS.

  • 81 Bill // Feb 28, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Kevin I think the cavs would have been fine if they would have just gotten a guy like delonte west who can push tthe ball, I think larry would have fit in very well with him and Lebron then, and I do like Joe smith and I think he needs to play more because he is good. I also hope wally comes around that is what I am worried about most because you complain about Larry’s salary and look what wally’s is and I would much rather have Larry then wally for that price. Hey clefan relax, I agree lets wait and see what happens because trust me I hope they do turn it around and gel!

Hey Wally Szczerbiak please stop taking so many bad shots!

  • 83 evan // Feb 28, 2008 at 4:21 pm

    LARRY HUGHES IS GOD…
HE IS THE STAR OF THE BULLS,

    clefan,
you should make a post or 2 about larry every cuple weeks to show how he is doing in everything

  • 84 henry // Feb 28, 2008 at 9:42 pm

You should ebay this site to a Bulls fan, and let them keep on the tradition!

  • 85 Aj // Feb 28, 2008 at 11:06 pm

haha Kevin…Idiot am i? Just for having an opinion? You can disagree or agree with what i say, but calling someone an idiot over the net is quite low.

If you had been watching Larry Hughes play lately (before the trade) and listening to the commentators, then you would have known that Hughes had changed his shot style. And he was finding confidence in his shot. He was also creating his own shots, and it was working great for him and the team.

Scrub what Hughes had done in the past, its about NOW! He has changed, but i guess you’re the blind one, not the squirrel…

That was a low comment as well. I guess we’re even now.

Hughes has been great with the Bulls. And the Bulls have the best bench in the league i believe.

    Go Cavs!

  • 86 Deejay // Feb 29, 2008 at 5:43 am

AJ defending your boy until the end i like it :-p

i have alway liked hughes but he was bad for the cavs as they for him

glad to see them part so the cavs can do what we need to do (not sure what that is)

and so Hughes can get him self back on track his shot was coming along very nice in the last month or so and i was very happy but the cavs were just to restricting (offense = not up tempo enough Defense = he was not allowed to do what made him such a successful ball thief in Washington and thats gamble on D) for hughes to reach his full potential (his poor shot selection had a lot to do with mike brown saying he wants Sasha and Hughes to quote(roughly) “shot there way out of there slumps”

great job man. i will sorely miss this site but i think you did the right thing since it will never be the same without larry hughes the cavalier. thanks for providing us with GOOD entertainment and we’ll be waiting for your next project. kudos!

  • 88 Miami Fan // Feb 29, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Dude you should make a website http://www.heyjasonwilliamsstoptakingsomanybadshots.com
that would be awsome and much apreciated by me and other Miami fans

  • 89 BigZ_23 // Mar 1, 2008 at 10:48 am

Is it me, but is Hughes playing a lot better in Chicago? He’s shooting 44% altogether, 43% from the arc, 76% from the line, and averaging 18 points in the Windy City. WHAT THE HELL, LARRY? Why didn’t you play like that in Cleveland?

  • 90 Brad // Mar 1, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Loved your site. Ditto what everyone else said.

How do we find out when you start a new site?

  • 91 Tobey // Mar 2, 2008 at 9:27 am

Well it seams like Larry’s back to his old ways. In his first start with the Bulls, he throws up an impressive 5 for 16 (31.3%) shooting performance. In four games with the Bulls, Mr Hughes is doing his best immitation of a Yo-Yo with 54% shooting followed by 36%, then 53% followed by 31%.

Oh and my favorite stat from his last game (thanks to Yahoo) is -18 which is the Bulls net points when he was in the game.

I’m looking forward to todays Cavs vs. Bulls game.

  • 92 evan // Mar 2, 2008 at 1:03 pm

  • 94 MaskedKoala // Mar 3, 2008 at 1:39 am

  • 95 Jeremy // Mar 3, 2008 at 6:48 am

  • 97 Beatrice Springfield // Mar 3, 2008 at 8:38 am

You know what this feels like? When Phish broke up in 2004. They had so much left in the tank and they called it off anyway. We need you, oh anon Larry Hughes detractor, your words are like the first snowflakes on a schoolday.

  • 98 Kent // Mar 3, 2008 at 5:49 pm

A headline from this morning’s Beacon Journal - “Hughes enjoys fun more than victory.” Please, for old times sake, this must deserve one more post……

  • 99 Matthew // Mar 5, 2008 at 5:45 pm

    QUOTE
–Here is what Larry Hughes said to me and Lisa Salters from ABC before the game. Lisa couldn’t believe it and made sure he knew what he was saying. Here it is:

“I play to enjoy myself, some people take this the wrong way, but winning a championship is not what I base everything on. I was given an opportunity to play basketball, travel around and have fun doing it and that’s what I want to do. I wouldn’t take being unhappy and not being myself and winning.
I would rather enjoy myself with 18,000-20,000 people watching the game and the people sending fan mail and those things and be happy…I didn’t come here to play the point guard, that’s just it. I came here to run the wing, just like he was running the other wing. I was asked to sacrifice for the team to win and for everybody, I guess, get paid. That is what was told to me and I wasn’t happy with that.”

I do understand that Larry did make sacrifices when he played for the Cavs. I do understand that he was not playing in a system that thrilled him. But I cannot believe he is saying he would rather have fun — read: getting to run around the way he wants and take lots and lots of shots — than win. I thought winning is fun, sitting at home at watching the playoffs is no fun according to most NBA players I’ve known. I can see not playing at all, just sitting on the bench. But if you are a big part of a winning team, I thought that was desirable. Very few players in this league get everything they want, most of the time you have to settle. As long as Larry was being paid what he was being paid, I’d think some settling would’ve been acceptable. That’s the other thing, the comment about just winning and getting paid. Larry earned $4 million in bonuses over the last two years because the Cavs hit win targets in his contract. The more the team won, the more he did get paid. That said, in the playoff run last season, even before he got hurt, I didn’t get the sense that he was happy. I never saw that joy from him, so I think this is probably more than just lip service, I think he really means it.

So I suppose today was interesting for Larry. He got 20 shots, he got 23 points, he got shut down in the stretch run by LeBron and then had to watch as LeBron carried the Cavs to a win. Under his terms, I suppose it was a happy afternoon. Plus he said he got to see his pet bulldogs, which he said was the only thing he missed in Cleveland.

At least he realizes this that people are gonna take it the wrong way
