Overheard at the game in Houston last night:
Houston Fan: “Wow, that was a pretty crappy shooting night for Larry Hughes.”
Larry Fan: ”But we didn’t have Gooden, Sasha, or Varejao.”
Houston Fan: “How does that impact Larry’s 3 point accuracy?”
Larry Fan: “But Daniel Gibson was injured too.”
Houston Fan: “But why would you blame Larry’s bad shooting on Daniel Gibson’s hamstring?”
Larry Fan: “Dude, you just don’t understand!”

Your site is hilarious. Congrats on quality laughter. But I’d also rather see Larry take and make some (more) good shots.

I just think larry was a little upset that daniel gibson got invited to the 3-point shootout and he didn’t. So larry tried to silence the critics and prove the selectors wrong! Well he failed horribly…:( But look on the bright side larry at least your alma mater managed to score more than 20 points. YESSSSSSSS!!!!! Just to bad you failed to do so yet again.

Dear God, with AV, Sasha, Drew, and now Boobie on the shelf, who is going to take our shots???
I expect a 2-17 performance tonight from Laura.

I love this blog. I thought I was alone in my contempt for Mr Hughes’ shot selection. We don’t even get to see many Cavs games here in Australia, which unfortunately means I spend a lot of time studying box scores.

Gmoney, you were very close…good prediction. But thankfully this happened… “Hughes stubbed his toe with just over 5 minutes remaining and didn’t return. ” The sole reason why the Cavs won last night ….DJ got in the game, and Hughes was hiking up his skirt on the bench.

You’ve got a clever thing going here, but you really REALLY should be using effective field goal percentage rather than straight-up FG%.
For why: http://www.nba.com/sonics/news/stats101.html

Alex,
You guys do a fantastic job over a Mistake By The Lake Sporting Times. It’s always a great read and I enjoy your detailed analysis mixed in with lots of humor. You were one of the first sites I linked to when I started this site. Keep up the good work!
In regards to the eFG%, I agree 100% that it’s a better stat. I suppose I use the normal FG% because people already have a barometer for what’s a crappy field goal percentage. In the case of Larry, if I started publishing his 39% eFG stat, people might say “Well 39% isn’t bad at all”. While savvy folks like you and your bro would recognize that 39% eFG would still rank Larry almost dead last among starting guards in the NBA.
But I’ll try to do a better job of incorporating some of these better stats into my site. But in Larry’s example, I don’t think that particular stat changes the story too much. His FG% is horrible as compared to the rest of the league and his eFG% is also horrible when compared to the rest of the league.
Thanks!
